Nanotechnology Symposium VI Progress in Protection

Benign by design. That was a major push of the "Nanotechnology Symposium VI: Progress in Protection," attended by nearly 200 people, either in person or via a webcast. The Luskin Center co-sponsored event addressed the challenge of protecting the health and safety of workers, as well as the environment, while taking advantage of nanotechnology that is expected to usher in a new industrial revolution.

Maziar Movassaghi, acting director of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control, emphasized that "benign by design" is crucial so that later on, millions of dollars don't have to be spent cleaning up the environment. Engineering safe nanomaterials from the start is also the best way to protect workers who are on the front line of the booming industry, according to leading scientists and government officials at the Oct. 13 symposium.
