Der Industrial Designer ist der Prokurator der Masse. Es ist erstaunlich, dass der Verbraucher oder Gebraucher an dem Entscheidungsprozeß über die Dinge, die er zur Befriedigung seiner Bedürfnisse benötigt, nur indirekt beteiligt ist. Also ist der Designer in erster Linie der Anwalt des Verbrauchers oder Gebrauchers. Allerdings ist er damit auch gleichzeitig das Produkt der Masse. Jedermann hat seine eigenen Maßstäbe. Jeder fällt seine eigene Entscheidung. Die besondere Aufgabe des Designers ist die Vorwegnahme zukünftiger Entscheidungen anderer, wie die seiner eigenen.

The industrial designer is the advocate of the people. It is amazing that the user or consumer is only indirectly involved in the decision process governing things he requires to satisfy his needs. So, in the first place, the designer is the user’s or consumer’s advocate. But at the same time this makes him a product of the people. Everyone has his own yardstick.
Everyone makes their own decision. The particular task of the designer is to anticipate the decisions which others will make in the future as if they were his own.
